Inline Electric Vehicle Battery Computed Tomography – why is it a good idea and how can it be done fast enough?Global electric vehicle (EV) sales are expected to reach 14.5 million units in 2023 but the lifetime of these EVs is largely dependent on the quality of the battery when the car is manufactured. Inspecting for faults in the batteries during the manufacturing process is critical and we look at how inline computed tomography plays a part in this

Spectrum Logic launches 2824HS: A super-fast detector for NDT and X-ray Microscopy
Spectrum Logic, an innovator in X-ray imaging solutions, today launched the latest product from its range of large area flat panel detectors. 2824HS, a super-fast X-ray detector with imaging area of 280 x 240 mm2, supporting 90 fps for an active image size of 2802 x 2400 pixels. Even higher frame rates are possible in region of interest (ROI) mode. Targeting advanced industrial CT and X-ray microscopy applications, the 2824HS is a CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) based X-ray flat panel detector (FPD) that provides high resolution images and covers a wide energy range.
The combination of the pixel pitch of 100 µm, 90 fps readout provides super-fast imaging required by demanding applications such as pre-clinical CT, X-ray diffraction and X-ray microscopy. The detector the largest member of our 100 µm HS family. The 2824HS detector has been designed and developed particularly for high speed, high energy X-ray applications with lead shielding to protect electronics and CMOS sensor from radiation damage and hence offering longer lifetime in the field.
The 2824HS is comprised of an array of four wafer-scale CMOS sensors precisely stitched together with a maximum gap of 100 um between the centre of neighbouring active pixels (one row or column). With a choice of high resolution CsI, high efficiency CsI or Gadox scintillator, the 2824HS is an ideal candidate for dynamic imaging with superior image quality over a large range of scientific and industrial applications. Having a saturation dose of 4 µGy and MTF of 10% @ 5 lp/mm with high resolution CsI scintillator, it is an ideal choice for low dose per frame and high frame rate imaging applications, including real time NDT inspection.
The 2824HS is offered with a choice of three interfaces including Camera Link, USB 3.1 and 10 Gigabit Ethernet. The USB is a simple plug-and-play interface which can be used with our Graphical User Interface (GUI) Software to get up and running in minutes without requiring a frame grabber. Our in-house software development supports offers a Windows-based software development kit (SDK) for easy and smooth integration to into the customer’s software. The SDK offers image capture and corrections.
Ed Bullard, Chairman of Spectrum Logic commented that, “the 2824HS is one of the fastest wafer-scale CMOS flat panel X-ray detectors in the world. Given its large field of view and highly sensitive active pixel sensor, it is a great fit for applications like X-ray Microscopy where high geometric magnifications are combined with low dose. Our vision at Spectrum Logic is to utilize our world leading CMOS sensor technology to develop high end, high quality X-ray detectors for professional applications in NDT and scientific X-ray imaging”.
